UK voting rights for expats living in Spain
Voting rights for UK citizens living in Spain has been a hot topic for many years. It is an important issue for many people. Decisions made in the UK regarding pensions for example impact on people who choose to live abroad. That choice should not necessarily mean being cut off from the British democratic process. Well, now that is changing.
A new law has just come into force which allows British citizens living abroad to register to vote in UK General Elections. This new right extends to all UK citizens, even if you’ve lived away for over 15 years.
The timing of this decision by the government is no accident. With a General Election expected in the second half of 2024 and the conservatives lagging in the poles, the Tories are hoping that more of their supporters will register to vote than supporters of other parties. This voting right extends to all expats regardless of how long they have been living in Spain. Do you live in Spain, do you need to send money to Spain? Voting registration is done online
Registering to vote is easy, you just need to click on this link and follow the step-by-step instructions. You will need your UK address where you were previously registered to vote. Or, if you never registered to vote in the UK, then use the last UK address you lived at before moving to Spain.
Once the General Election is called you will have the option of voting by post or by proxy. Finally, there is a requirement to re-register to vote every three years.
